The commodity markets remain very unstable.  Note the below major steel (heavy melt) price drop in February that at the time no one had forecast.  When the below heavy melt/steel graph is updated in a day to two (the below heavy melt graph is week old), it will show an approx. $20/GT drop and we are hearing there could be another $25+ drop next month.

As for copper (see below), about two weeks ago, we had a period of a couple of weeks of stable to slight increase in prices.  Then days after the U.S. reported:

-the best car sales in about 10 years in June,

-the best depending home sales in June in 9 years

-Lowest unemployment rate in 9 years for June

-The oil rig count went up for the first time the previous week, after 29 weeks of declines (oil rigs use a lot of steel)

….after all the above good news, China’s stock market was coming unglued (dropped 36% in 29 days) and the Greek issue became ugly, so copper hit new approx. 6+ year low, again, days after all the U.S. great news.

As said, prices in the steel (heavy melt) graph below will show lower data in a day or so and could go down next month.  If things remain stable in the U.S. and globally, my best forecast would be that prices could be about $10/GT lower near the end of the year then they are today and copper could be $.15+ lower.

I will end with being like a true economist and say, ‘on the other hand’, if China pumps money into their economy and oil prices dive, that will be a key boost to the global economy, and prices could rise, but I am not ‘banking’ on that.

Note this is an old graph that when updated will be about $20/GT lower

Today is Monday, July 13th, 2015.  My name is Greg Brown, President and CEO of the companies.

There was nothing but turmoil and bad news in the markets last week, despite some very good news two weeks ago.  Today, Monday things remain very precarious with the Greek debt issue looking like there may be some resolution and China’s stock market being a key worry.

Steel Production

U.S. steel production came down a bit in the last two weeks after a few months of gains.  In recent weeks there has been word of a softening of orders in many industries which is a concern.

Oil Rig Count

One the positive side, we mentioned last week that automotive sales in June had hit a ten year high.  We can add that last week the oil rig count rose for a second week in a row, after 29 weeks of declines.  This along with strong automotive sales is a positive for U.S. steel consumption.  With that said oil prices dropped about 8% last week, which will probably stem this increase in U.S. oil drilling.

Oil production in the U.S remains strong and if there is a deal with Iran on nuclear issues, that will reduce world oil prices as Iranian oil flows freely.

Heavy Metal Price

Put together there was a dramatic change in ferrous prices last week.  This chart will show a dramatic drop with next week’s update.  Last Monday, there was word that some markets were stable and even up.  By Tuesday, all looked down a bit and by Wednesday as word in China and Europe turned negative, ferrous prices came down $20-$25 per GT.  As an example of bad news, the Chinese stock market after almost doubling in the past year fell 36% in about a month.

Since that the fall, the Chinese government stepped in last week and has been pouring money into their stock market, which toward the end of the week, had its best days since the crash of 2009.

Note that the lowering of steel prices will further reduce flow and profits in scrap yards, especially in the SE, but there is enough scrap metal coming in from Europe on barges to meet demand.

Copper Prices

Copper prices crashed along with steel last week.  Copper hit new 6 plus year lows on Wednesday.  Again as China slows, copper prices are hit hard.   With oil prices yet again coming down, this should work to increase consumer spending and should help copper prices.

Aluminum

Last week aluminum had almost the exact movement as copper, by hitting a new 6+ year low mid-week and then bounced up a bit.

These low volumes and profits in the scrap industry, took yet another toll last week.  Kemp Recycling that had three North Carolina operations two years ago, closed two of them about a year ago and there is word that the third and last one closed last Friday.  This mostly retail scrap yard is the type of yard that is being hurt very badly in this downturn that shows no sign of getting better anytime soon.

For current prices, please call us at 919-828-5426 in Raleigh, 919-731-5600 in Goldsboro.

With that we hope all have a Safe and Profitable week.   Tune in next week for the Commodity and Recycling report.

Today's Current Wilson NC Copper and Aluminum scrap metal Prices per pound, at Wilson Metal Recycling

Wilson, NC Scrap Metal Prices
Copper and Aluminum
Copper and Aluminum scrap metal prices had to come down Monday morning here at Wilson Metal Recycling.  While prices have been somewhat steady for about three weeks, the global markets changed dramatically in the past 24 hours to the point that we had no choice but to lower prices.  China's stock market has fallen almost 20% in recent weeks and stabilized today, but it is still down a major amount.
Greece has major debt problems with its banks closed and the rest of the world is trying to figure out what to do, so with that Copper, Aluminum, Oil and other products around the world have dropped significantly.

This is the Commodities and Recycling report, brought to you by BENLEE the industry leader in roll off trailers and open top scrap trailers, as well as Raleigh and Goldsboro Metal Recycling, the leaders in North Carolina for Scrap Metal, Cardboard, Electronics and Junk Cars.

Today is Monday, July 6th, 2015.  My name is Greg Brown, President and CEO of the companies.

There was a lot of news last week, but only yesterday and this morning there was major news that led to changes in commodities and recycling.  The bad news yesterday and this morning is that the Greek debt issue is far from being resolved, especially with the Greek people turning down an offer from the EU yesterday.  It is not clear what effect this will have on the global economy, but things are not good.

Steel Production
On the positive side, steel production came down a bit last week, but overall it has been coming up slowly for months.  Schnitzer Steel released lower earnings last week despite slightly higher steel shipments.  Lower earnings in their recycling division as well as other all other divisions hurt the company.

Oil Rig Count
Importantly there was a lot of good news last week.  The oil rig count rose for the first time in 29 weeks.  Oil rigs use major amounts of steel.  June auto sales were the highest for any June in 10 years.  Pending home sales ending May hit a nine year high and the jobs report had unemployment hit 5.3% which was the lowest in over 9 years.  The downside is wage growth remains weak.  Together these are some of the reasons we are seeing a slow increase in steel production.
Heavy Melt Price
As for Ferrous pricing, despite increases in steel production we are hearing that multiple steel companies have barges of scrap metal arriving this month from Europe could cause a dampening of scrap metal prices this month.  There were some lower priced ferrous sales last week and the rest will be traded in the next few days.  There is still a possibility of no decrease in some markets and even a small increase in that especially in the SE there remains a scrap metal shortage.

Importantly, steel mills did not cancel orders in the SE last week, which would have happened if there was a major decrease in prices coming. They did not cancel orders due to steel mills needed scrap metal flowing into their operations, before and after the holiday weekend.
Copper Prices
Copper prices were steady last week for the third week in a row, yet in the past few hours prices dropped to an almost 6+ year low.  China’s economy which is a key for copper prices remains in flux with its stock market having fallen over 20% in recent weeks. Due to the major stock market drop, effective today, the Chinese government has authorized a massive buying of stocks by brokers to try and stabilize stock prices.
Aluminum
Aluminum is pretty much the same as copper in that it too has not seen any real change in recent weeks until today.

Overall there while there was some very positive news, mixed with very negative Greek news, prices and volumes in recycling remain very, very depressed.  There is word of more scrap metal operations closing in parts of the industry.  The SE part of the U.S. continues to see larger volume drop offs vs. other parts of the U.S., due to dramatically lower retail peddler traffic.  Only the strong and diversified will make it through this tough time as well as those that have partnered with stronger operations.

For current prices, please call us at 919-828-5426 in Raleigh, 919-731-5600 in Goldsboro.

With that we hope all have a Safe and Profitable week.   Tune in next week for the Commodity and Recycling report.
